World Cup Squad Guide: Mexico - Full Fixtures, Group, Key Players, Odds, and More

When naming his final lineup for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Mexico's manager Gerardo "Tata" Martino said there won't be many surprises. Fans of Mexico for the World Cup, here’s your ultimate guide regarding their fixtures, roster, players, and more.

Is Mexico ready?

When it comes to El Tri, the mystery will be provided by injuries, most notably up front. Problems in the scoring department have dogged Mexico for the past 12 months, and it's unknown if some of their top strikers will be able to return to form in time for the World Cup.

On October 26, Mexico will reveal their provisional roster for the WorldCup22 ahead of a pair of friendly matches against Iraq in Spain on November 9. These matches will let Martino determine which 26 players to go to Qatar. Before heading to Qatar, El Tri will make their base in Girona, Spain.

On November 9 they'll face Iraq, and on November 16 they'll take on Sweden, all before opening Group C action against Poland on Tuesday, November 23. (12:00 AM SGT). They also have games against Argentina on November 27 at 3:00 AM SGT, and Saudi Arabia on December 1. (3:00 AM SGT).

Mexico 26-man World Cup Squad

Martino will use the upcoming Girona, Spain, friendly against Iraq to finalize his selection of 26 players. After seeing the preliminary roster of 31 players announced in late October, he will only have to remove five of them.

Goalkeeper: Carlos Acevedo, Guillermo Ochoa, Alfredo Talavera

Defender: Kevin Alvarez, Nestor Araujo, Gerardo Arteaga, Jesus Gallardo, Cesar Montes, Hector Morena, Jorge Sanchez, Johan Vasquez

Midfielder: Edson Alvarez, Luis Chavez, Andres Guardado, Erik Gutierrez, Hector Herrera, Orbelin Pineda, Carlos Rodriguez, Luis Romo

Forward: Uriel Antuna, Santiago Gimenez, Raul Jimenez, Diego Lainez, Hirving Lozano, Henry Martin, Alexis Vega

Mexico’s Strengths

Members of Mexico's team are technically and tactically proficient, having skills that allow them to maintain possession and control games. While they are far from the absolute favorite as evidenced by the World Cup betting odds 2022, Chucky Lozano's involvement is key to determining whether or not they can cause damage to the other teams.

The wingers, Alexis Vega and Jesus "Tecatito" Corona (if he recovers in time from a ligament injury to his left ankle and broken left fibula sustained in practice with Sevilla), are the team's primary creators. If their opponents are able to contain Mexico, the Mexican team will be unable to pose much of a threat.

Mexico’s Weaknesses

Scoring goals and defending against set pieces isn't a particularly attractive pairing. There is much ado about Mexico's constant turnover up front, but the team's lack of success is due more to poor passing than poor finishing.

We already established that if the wingers aren't producing, there is little hope for inspiration from anywhere else. Wolves forward Raul Jimenez is the reigning starter when healthy, with Santiago Gimenez as his backup.

But one could make a case for Henry Martin, an unselfish forward who regularly returns to aid in the team's offensive set-up. Every once in a while, Mexico could use some backup in the middle of the field.

Players to watch out for

Napoli winger Hirving Lozano will have to be a game-changer and a source of offensive inspiration for Mexico if they are to achieve their declared aim or go even further. He can cause havoc among the opposition defense and create openings for his teammates.

Martino may turn to 21-year-old Santiago Gimenez to lead the team for Mexico if Raul Jimenez's injury problems and lack of form persist. We’ll just have to witness it ourselves at the World Cup live stream free 2022 available online.

Gimenez scored for the first time for El Tri in a friendly match against Chile last December, and while he seems to be the future of the team, he may be forced to play in the present if El Tri fails to advance out of the group stage in Qatar.

World Cup Predictions

Mexico's streak of advancing out of the group stage in each of their last 8 World Cup matches is in jeopardy, but they have a good chance of beating Poland in their decisive Group C match provided they can contain Robert Lewandowski.

You shouldn't discount their World Cup experience; even though they've not reached the quarterfinals since 1986, many think they'll do so this time around. For more news, as well as exciting free World Cup bets and offers, Solarbet is the place to be!
